I have two excellent Klondike derby sled diagrams on the Okpik.Org Website
[still under construction]:
We used the top sled last year. It is a plan from 1963 from a Troop in our
Council. It is simple to make, and uses scrap wood.
The second sled is one of Ben Hunt's: he writes, "I made these drawings
from a real honest-to-goodness Klondike sled brought from Alaska. It is
fastened together with both screws and rawhide lashings and is sturdy, yet
flexible for rough going. Working from these drawings, you can alter to
suit conditions and materials and still retain the general lines. This
sled was made of ash. Oak or birch will work equally well and good net
twine can be used for lashing and later treated with boiled linseed oil."
I will be adding 3 more sleds by Ben Hunt, and at least half-dozen sleds by
Dan Beard in the next week.
Can you believe it? I recently ordered a $20 copy of a Dan Beard book
through the mail. I opened it today to find Ernest Thompson Seton's
personal book plate inside! So the drawings that I will be sharing with
you all are from Seton's own copy of Dan Beard's Field and Forest Handy
Hope this helps,
Scoutmaster, Troop 252
Buffalo, The Kudu Net,
and a good 'ol Beaver too!
