I am not directly involved in our District Pinewood Derby. I do appear at
the Pack's event every year to help out and speak to scouts about joining
I do believe that in our area each Pack has its own race. AFAIK each (and
every) scout is still free to enter that same car in the District event.
I would object to a National competition for Cub Scouts. There would be
more than one scout who would not have the time and/or resources to go to a
National Competition if they won a District or Regional competition. Pack
and District should be enough for each scout. Heck, making the car should
be enough fun, racing should just be the after thought here. This is about
each scout doing HIS best, not about being BETTER than the other guy.
That does not mean that competition is bad, or I want to do away with
giving a prize to the scout with the fastest car. Most Cub Scouts I know
think that race day is one of the highlights of the year. I just do not
see the need to escalate this thing beyond the core organization...the Pack.
If you want a National event, then allow every Cub Scout who wishes to
attend go, build a car there and race it. Imagine, one hundred work shops,
400 tracks, thousands of scouts, hundreds of volunteer workers...now that
sounds like real fun.
