In the spring I wrote about my son having to choose between the Air Force
Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, and ROTC at CSU. Then in the last few
weeks the list has had a discussion on military as a career, and the lack of
interest in the younger generation.
Well, my son is home from the Air Force Academy for Thanksgiving for which I
am grateful, as I miss him very much. He is a doolie, or slave; afreshman at
the academy. I thought I would relate one of the stories he told this
The Air Officer Commanding (AOC) his squadron assemble all the 4 degrees,
freshman for a briefing. The AOC asked how many of the cadets were from
divorced families. Only two of the cadets out of thirty-six raised their
hands. Combine this with only 26% of the children live in a nuclear family
you may see an answer to the problem. Why having both natural parents may
affect interest in the military or service to your country is unknown to me,
but I would throw this out to the list for discussion.
By the way, my son has already been advised that post-graduate work is an
option for him, so he is doing very well, but miserable from time to time.
