(This posting is in two parts to overcome the 200 line limit; my apologies
For some reason, some of Ed Dunn's emails haven't been hitting our list, and
he rightfully feels, as several other Scouters whom have wrote me privately
when it happens to them, as somehow "someone" is "censoring" what they say
and do here on Scouts-L.
I've been a participant on this forum for 10 years this month, and I share
this honor with several other Scouters whom have been here when we argued
over how much control we should give our youth, to the value we place upon
our professional counterparts, to whether or not females would "make it" as
BSA volunteers and professionals; and even to much less sillier stuff like
which "Wood Badge animal" should be "held up" as the "best", the patrol in
which Wood Badgers should "emulate". Silly, because we ALL know that the
BEST patrol is the one YOU belonged to during the experience....no matter
what it was called (and we proved it here!)
I can recall in those ten years only TWO postings receiving any sort of
Both of them were wrote by a gentleman named Yale Zussman (remember that
"blast from our past", folks? *smiling*) whom felt that the BSA-Alpha Phi
Omega (a national service fraternity based upon the ideas of Scouting and
present on many of our nation's college and university campuses)
"connection" should be retained and the BSA should admit more people than
they did and on and on and on.... In BOTH cases, Yale attacked individuals
on this list, which prompted a TEAM of us to decide to recommend to Jon that
he be removed from the list and his posting "censored."
Jon Eidson is the ONLY person that can remove anyone from HIS list. Yeah,
it's HIS list; he is the sole List Owner.
Even then, Yale sent postings to me and after I've thought carefully about
their content, did I share them with the rest of the list. He slowly went
away, his "fight" not maintained because as we've all been raised, "there's
a lot of times in which the best thing to do is to walk away from
bullies..." even if it means your pride gets a little hurt.
I post all of this "stroll down memory lane" stuff, only because I wanted
everyone to know that Ed Dunn has NOT been "removed" from this list and his
postings, like everyone else's here, IS important. And as a reminder that
the reason why ten years have now passed by and this list is STILL held in
high regard is because:
*No national or local organization "controls" this list. They can't, not
with the broad number of "Scouters" from the BSA, the GSUSA, several local
organizations, faith-based programs, and programs from some 11 other
countries around the world reading and answering on this forum;
*There are SOME TOPICS WE (said generically, as in "the list") JUST DON'T
ENTER INTO DISCUSSIONS ABOUT. They are topics in which the nature of the
responses become too personal with a great deal of tendancy for us to forget
that we're all helping to "play the game" of youth programming and greater
deal of tendancy to "attack the person instead of the comment;"
*EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion, feeling, and expression as it is
shared with some 3000 or so other individuals every single day here. As
such, each person is ALSO asked to restrain and "collar in" some of their
more, for lack of a better term, more "colorful" remarks and statements.
With only 50 messages coming to your box each day, there's a simple way to
bypass or not read those messages from individuals, for whatever reason, you
don't want to "hear from" today. Every email program has a "delete" or
"remove" button or keystroke in which to destroy that posting. In the
"Digest" mode, you can just zip through his or her comments and move onward
to the next posting. In the "web-based" archived versions, there's a "Next"
button or text in which you can hit with your pointer.
The other half of this posting deals with Ed's question to us all and my
response to him.
