We made a trip from Atikokan many years ago and I found it to be very nice
up there. The country is about the same as going up from Ely, except
there are a lot less people canoeing in that area. It seems that most
people think the only way to enter the Quetico is from the South, but that
is not the case. It is a little more driving to get there, but I was a
pleasure to have more "wilderness". I don't know if the numbers are still
low, but I suspect they are. Of course, Sommers was not operating at
Atikokan back then, or we certainly would have used them. Back then, the
reported difference in use of the area near Atikokan and the area around
Ely was a factor of about 10. In other words, there were 10 times more
people coming out of the Ely area. Something to consider.
