After reading Robert Wright's story about selecting a troop and the time he
values with his son, I thought I would share this story with the list.
Yesterday at school, my son hurt his arm in gym class in one of the first
periods. All day, he was back and forth to the school nurse to get ice
because it apparently hurt all day (we weren't notified of this accident and
while I'm willing to accept that sometimes active kids can get hurt, I
really wasn't too pleased with the lack of notice, but that is another
matter that we're dealing with). Anyway, yesterday afternoon was filled
with running to the pediatrician, the hospital for x-rays, and the
orthopedist for casting of a minor broken wrist bone. We then got home and
I made dinner. This morning I had a eye doctor's appointment, so it was up
at 5:30 so my wife and I could get showered, get both kids up, cleaned and
dressed, and fed breakfast (bacon and eggs--son's favorite). I also had to
make lunches. As we're ready to out the door, my son is sitting on the sofa
writing and I questioned him about what he was up to.
"If that's homework, I could give you a note because of your broken arm."
"No, Dad, it's not homework," he said.
"If that's homework, I really wish you'd have said you had to do this last
"No, Dad, it's not homework," he said again.
He folded his papers and packed his bags and I went off getting the last
details together. It was then out the door to the doctor while my wife took
our son and daughter to school.
I got on the turnpike to the doc's office and while exiting reached into my
bag to get cash for the fare and found the following short note:
All I have to say is thanks for being my dad."
My wife got a similar note in her lunch bag.
I've been thinking of that note that no one told him to write and my son all
day. I'm so proud of him and the man he's becoming. And he's only 11.
Just had to share with somebody.
