scouts-l Mail Archive for November of 1999: Troop Size/Laser Tag

1. Troop size - yup, some time ago the figured an average troop was a certain
size. National also figured out that if you expect your unit to last x years
it needs to have an average that was larger (if the first figure was 21, the
second was in the 30's, to give you an idea). I'd go into greater detail but
I do not carry around all this stuff 24/7 despite what some people think.
2. Laser tag - since apparently no one else from the course is on the list or
wrote it down or remembered:
The Venturing course at PTC was blessed with the man responsible for G2SS in
the next room. Since Venturing gets to do a lot of things Boy Scouting
doesn't, at one point the instructors gave up telling us to go across the
hall and talk to him and instead brought him to us.
Laser Tag, or any other form of game where you are pointing a weapon at
another Scout is not allowed. Whether it is stated specifically in G2SS or
not, that was the intention. That SHOULD NOT be stretched to interpret
anything that could be likened to warfare -- like capture the flag (or for
that matter, a number of other team sports) -- should be banned since those
are games which involve development of Scout Skills and Strength and a few
other things I cannot recall.
Now if you want to discuss the sports you can't do, someone pull out the book
and read it, I can't remember. Except that Venturing gets to hunt, gets to
climb differently (and that is supposed to be opened even more for the
Venturers in the future) and gets to use semi-auto weapons....
