My Webelos I Den just got back from an overnight where the other leaders and
I taught them fire safety and how to start fires. As a demonstration, I
demonstrated flint & steel, as well as the magnifying glass methods. I
tried the friction method, but that went down in flames (rather than up) if
you know what I mean. This demonstration was after we had them build their
We gave them several pieces of wood and two matches. They were told the
only tool they could use was their pocket knives. The boys loved that!
They could not use any other materials other than what they were given.
They had to whittle their tinder, and break up the wood for kindling. The
only boy that couldn't do it with two matches unfortunately broke his
matches. You should have seen their concentration on trying to start their
fires! One of the other Webelos Leaders commented that they had never seen
