I find myself in need of some support on an issue that is causing great
strife in my pack.
I have a Webelos 2nd year who has completed all activity requirements and
all other requirements
for his AOL except the following. He is not 10.5 years old nor has he been
an active member of
a Den for 6 months after completing the 4th grade.
I have refused on those grounds to sign off on his AOL award. It has gotten
so bad that even the
Scout Executive is aware of the situation but is not taking a stand either
way. We do not currently have a
DE. This scout is a great young man and will make a fine boy scout. If I
back down and award the AOL his
mother will have him immediately bridge. It will also put me in the
position of having to let three other
Webelos go as well. This will take away a lot from the rebuilding of our
pack. It will also destroy the Webelos Den
and leave it with 2 Webelos 1st year.
I have tried to explain all these issues to everyone, but the mother is
determined. (She is the Troop Committee Chair)
She feels that since he actively participated with the Boy Scout Troop all
summer,(His brother is SPL) that it should be counted
as active Den participation. I say no, there was no active Den during the
summer, there was not even a national summertime program
for the pack.
No matter what I do, I will come out the loser personally and so will my
son,(Webelos 2nd Year as well). If I am taking the wrong
stance tell me and I will back off. If I am taking the correct stance then
let me know that as well. A meeting has been called
for tonight to settle this issue at 6:15 PM CST. The District Commissioner,
Cub Master, Scout Master, the parents and myself
will be there. As it stands right now, I seem to be the sole voice (at
least outloud) for this stance. The CM will go with the majority,
The SM will not make waves, (mother is Committee Chair), and the DC doesn't
want to make anyone upset.
