Another thing that makes the merit badge program difficult for some boys
is simply a lack of social skills. Telling a boy, "Call your counselor
and set up an appointment" may simply bewilder him. He may need to know
exactly what to say and even have to have it written down. Not all
teens spend hours on the phone!
Having a boy with shaky social skills paired with one with "better"
social skills might be all he needs. But, he may need someone like an
SPL or even an ASM to help walk him through it a couple of times. Even
if he never earns another merit badge, helping him with phone skills and
asking someone for help is bound to help him somewhere down the road.
