To my Scouts-L family. Please join me in praying for the James Burns Family
of Royal Oak, Michigan. I met Jim on Friday evening at the local soccer
dome. He was practicing with his two sons soccer team when he collapsed on
the field. I joined two others who were attempting to perform CPR. (One was
trained, one was not.) I took over for the un-trained person even though my
certification had lapsed a few years ago. While we were waiting for the
paramedics, we were able to get Jim breathing again, but not for very long.
The paramedics arrived and did all that they could but Jim was declared dead
on arrival at the hospital.
I have been told that Jim probably died from a massive stroke since his
symptoms were so sudden and that nothing I could have done would have saved
him. Still, I am haunted by his children's faces as their beloved father was
transported from the soccer field. Jim left behind a wife and three young
In Jim's memory, my family and I are taking the next available CPR
course and ask that all of you with lapsed certifications or no
certifications please do the same. There were 150-200 people in the facility
and only two of us who were trained. If we all do this, maybe the next
"Jim" will be saved.
