I already posted this on the Philmont mailing list, but I thought I would
post it on this vast warehouse of knowledge as well ;-), my apologies for
those who monitor both lists.
Well, after waiting 2 years my troop has gotten our first slot at Philmont
(for summer 2000)! We are only 5 years old, and this will be the first
year that we will have enough older Scouts to make a crew. As soon as I got
the word out, I had two mothers come to me with concerns about safety. One
said a neighbor (who is now in his late twenties) went on a trek and two
Scouts in his crew died (one was malled and another Scout lost his footing
while looking over a cliff and fell to his death)....the other mom heard
about problems as well.
I guess what I am asking for is how many deaths and serious accidents are
there per year, what are the causes, and how many Scouts and leaders go on
treks per year?
Any ideas? Is my best bet to call Philmont?
