scouts-l Mail Archive for November of 1999: Re: Additional Trained Patch for Webelos Leaders

In our area we came up with the 100% trained light bulb (a plastic gold
Christmas ornament the size of a nickel) which hangs from the right shoulder
button. In order to qualify for this bulb one must attend CLBT, OLT,
University of scouting and 4 roundtables. We started this last year by
awarding anyone who had ever completed this requirement. This year we are
looking at 30 or more who will be earning this award. The bulb makes for a
great conversation piece at many events. I love it because we get to stress
the need for training and detail the possible training events in our
district. It also gets them to complete the requirements for the leader
We believe in training!

Subject: Additional Trained Patch for Webelos Leaders
In our Council we have the rule that Webelos Leaders cannot get the
"trained" patch until they have completed both "Basic" and "Webelos Leader
Outdoor" training. Can I run this situation out by you all so that my
training team can discover what the other areas of the country are doing?
The real problem is this: The leaders will go through Cub Leader Basic, but
then have to wait to get their Trained patch until they have gone through
Webelos Outdoor Leader Training. Many of the new Webelos leaders are
beefing because they took the long training session and we only hold WOLT
in the Spring, so even thought they have been Basic Trainined, they have to
wait until Spring to get their trained patch.
How do your Councils handle this? I have thought of 3 ideas so far:
1) a device for WOLT to be placed on the "trained" patch from "Basic"
2) a smaller patch about the size of a nickle as a "Supplemental" training
patch to be worn under the "trained" patch (this could also come in a YP
patch for "Youth Protection" training),
3) a "trained" patch in a different color stitching such as a forest green
There must be other Councils with the same problem and other solutions.
Thanks in Advance
