Sorry, but I wouldn't agree that because the event is on a long weekend that
it just won't work. Our district had our fall camporee last year on the
Columbus day weekend with a great turnout (over 400 with the camp (Parker
Mountain) a 2 hour drive). A few troops did have to leave on sunday, but
most did stay and go home on monday. It worked out well. Our troop does a
special trip almost every year on memorial day weekend with almost full
participation. We also have done a weekend ski trip for the last 5 years on
the MLK holiday with very good turnout. Another district camporee some time
ago was held on a long weekend, but just ran from friday evening to sunday.
The nice thing about that was that it still allowed adults to have a campout
and still have a day off for other things.
My suggestion would be to start talking up the Klondike, make sure people
know that its that weekend and the advantage of having it on the long
weekend. Make sure that you communicate why this klondike derby is going to
be different and better than before.
