Robin's idea seems to have merit - that is to hold a district Webelos
Crossover for any/all units that haven't completed this process by March.
In our pack, our Webelos leaders work very hard to get the Webelos ready
for joining a troop. The process actually starts in Februaray of their
Webelos I year: they are invited to the distrcit "lock-in" event at a
local YMCA. Then starting in September, an SA from our sister troop works
with the Webelos II and their leaders to discuss a joint camping event and
attendance at one or more troop meetings. We learned from experience that
attending a Court of Honor is no way to see/learn the workings of a troop.
Traditionally, the Webelos II and their parents are invited to a campout
on a local farm with a pond in October. Also, our district highly
encourages troops to ask Webelos and their parents to the Fall Camporee.
In November or December, an SA visits the Webelos den to explain the
advancement process, the patrol process, how they'll learn Scout craft,
etc. By late January, the pack has the Arrow of Light ceremony, the
transfer papers are ready and the Webelos start joining in troop meetings
in February. These Webelos go through the crossover ceremony at the Blue
& Gold in February too so the younger Cubs and parents can see the "glory"
of the crossover.
My point in all this, is it is never too early to start the Webelos
transition to Boy Scout process. Get talking now and work together!
