For one thing, it provides continuity -- and in today's fast-changing
society, something that granddad and grandson can share is to be
cherished. For another, it allows city youth to see the outdoors as
something other than a chore or scenery. Without Boy Scouts, how would
one describe the kind of behaviour Boy Scouting encourages?
(OK, I probably wouldn't use that last one with a total stranger! -G-)
