Try arranging* to camp on one of the military reservations in the area,
Bolling and Andrews AFBs come to mind; and I do mean camp. Get
permission to use some of the wooded or rural areas of the base, pitch
tents, and camp as you would at a camporee. Cook on site, using normal
camping procedures, and reserve the mess hall....oooops, airpersons'
dining hall, for the first and last meal of the week, as you arrive and
depart. Then tour Washington DC to your heart's content.
*Contact the Scouting Liason Officer at either of these bases. This
person works for the Base Commander and is responsible for coordinating
scouting needs and the base. He or she can arange for you to use parts
of the base, tours of the base, and even a night or two in airmen's
housing or messing facilities.
