That's a good question Rich! The BSA still airs those numbers around
the profession, but does not deem it nessesary enough to tell us, the
volunteers. See, they used to give the monthly numbers thru several
professionals here at Scouts L, and my guess is that these folks were
told not to. That is of course only my view, but the fact is that I
asked for them less than a month ago, and did not get them. I have been
charting them, which gives me an accurate view of what is really going
on. Unfortunately it is too easy for an individual to get complacent
if the program is doing well locally. As you can see, this gives a
false sense of pride, which can allow the organization to fail and
nobody would know why. By looking at the totals, we can be better
informed and more equipted to do our job...which is to maintain the
Scouting program for future (as yet unborn) members. Unfortunately
after 13 years of professional Scouting, I had no accurate idea of where
we were; and I sure was'nt told the truth! There is a number in which
to fall below it would be paramount to non-existence. It has been
discussed at length what % that would be, but it is getting closer. A
good deal of that number comes from peer pressure.
