A Scouter asks:
I know I haven't thought out all of the possibilities, just throwing out an
idea. BTW all of my boys are similar in age so we could field a scout team
without to much difficulty.
I am sure some scouting regulation, policy or guide can provide me further
details on this. It there a form?
Guide to Safe Scouting, 1999, page 30: <boldface, indicates policy>
"<Varsity football teams and interscholastic or club football competition and
activities are unauthorised events.>"
This means you can't put together a Scout football team to play, say, in your
local Pop Warner league or school league. I believe this is related to the
idea that you can have more serious injury w/ football than many other
spports. And don't tell me, I know all about the serious injuries you can
incur in baseball, hockey, basketball, and kick-the-can.
I personally think this pgh should be expanded to all sports. No, this
wouldn't mean you couldn't play a ball game against your neighboring troop at
camp or on a joint campout weekend. It would mean you couldn't play in a
league or against a non-Scout group.
Another thought, though, is this: What part of the Scouting program are you
promoting with a baseball team? Is it to be a Scout-led activity, or will an
adult coach be the boss? Hmmm, that's probably not what you meant-- and it's
a major difference between the sports activities our kids play in and the
Scouting program. OK, what part of the team addresses advancement in rank?
Outdoor skills? Merit badges (besides "Sports")? Community service?
This is probably the major conceptual difference accounting for the fact that
there are no provisions for sports teams in the Scouting program. Sports are
fine, for what they are. But Scouting offers our youth something different. I
submit that when the kid can no longer make the team, get on the All-Stars,
or play JV, he can still be advancing as a Scout, and can take Scouting with
him far after he leaves his dreams of the NBA or MLB behind.
