Dad bringing home our first TV (1953)
Watching that "Indian Chief" test pattern and tone on the TV for an hour or
more Saturday morning til the cartoons came on.
The folks down the block leaving the HUGE cardboard box from their new
(first one on our block) _COLOR_ TV out next to the trash can for weeks.
The first McDonalds opening in town. (10 cent burgers?)
When Hostess Twinkies went from 10 cents to 11 cents. (highway robbery!)
Having to take my little sister to the Saturday movies (75 cents each for
admission, a COKE and enough popcorn, candy etc to get sick on...later in
the day) For that matter, a serial, 3-5 cartoons, newsreel, and maybe a
travel log BEFORE the feature. (sometimes even live guests, a yoyo demo, a
drawing for a bike etc)
Caster Oil (see above)
"it's good for what ails you" (see above)
Cod liver oil "it's good for what ail's you"
mustard plaster "it's good for what ail's you"
Not being old enough to go up to the balcony. (big kids kiss up
Big bikes had 26inch wheels and only one speed. (your milege may vary...did
you eat you WHEATIES?)
Every family vacation involving flat tires, bad fuel pump and/or "that
blinkety blank float in the carb is sticking AGAIN". ('50 Fords...God bless
them and may they rest in many pieces)
Going to car dealer row in the fall to see the ALL NEW line of cars. (And
yes, we spent more time at the Ford dealer than the other two.)
All the airlines flew DC-3s (in Aberdeen, SD they did)
Braniff, NorthCentral and Western Airlines
Great Northern, Western Pacific and Northern Pacific Railroads. And waving
to the guys in the cabosse.
Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day parades being led by the
Spanish American War and World War One Vets...in their old uniforms!!!
That really neat frogman that came inside each and every box of Corn Flakes
(I think) (You put baking soda in his foot and he would dive and then
surface repeatly in a pitcher of water)
Having to show your BSA membership card at J.C. Penny to buy Scout stuff.
Cub Scout picnic at Excelsior Amusement Park west of Minneapolis (long gone
"Clean your plate...there are children starving in Korea." (or Armania or
where ever) Still HATE lima beans.
Sister Henretta informing the class that "Those _DAMN_ Russian Communists
have built a wall clear across Berlin." (never heard a Nun use such
language before or since)
"DUCK and COVER!!!"
Film strips with that little beep
First TV in our classroom to watch Alan Sheperd become first American in
Walter Cronkite telling us what we had already guessed...JFK was dead.
