I do not believe you can compete with the Michael Jordan, Sousa,
or Altman money, fame, and power image. Back awhile ago I believe it
was MA-NeilL that suggested that many troops should make sure they
focused on the boys that were better customers for continuing onward
in scouting. Some examples are the smart boys, sometimes geeks, or
nerds, maybe even some boys that are out of shape physically or
family wise or boys and families that just don't think sports are the
be all and end all. These boys will more appreciate scouting and if
you turn the appreciation back on them the troop will grow in leaps
and bounds (<<NO they may not be track stars))
Pick up those that are cut and tossed away, all those that are worn
out, tired, hungry and bruised physically and emotionally by sports
do or die and you might be able to build a pretty good troop.
If you really are dead set on competition you are going to have to
go for Venturing, a High Adventure Venture Patrol, or a Varsity type
activity set and bring in outside adults that have the drive.
Good Luck which ever way you go.
YiS, IMHO, and may we each attempt to live the SO,SL,SS,SM
