I have seen the same thing happen. The best success we had when my son was
in Cub Scouts was parental involvement. Even involving a parent in only one
thing increases the likelihood that the boy will stay in scouts. I tried to
get my parents to help by asking them to take the lead for one activity pin
and that worked prety well.
We have the same problem in the troop my son is in now. There seems to be an
either/or but not both mentality. I believe we need to continue to have good
programs, emphasize our leadership developement and maintain flexibility.
Most boys will end up focusing on one sport, and even with year round
training will have time for scouts if that is what he wants to do. Our job
is to get the boy to realize that scouts is really what he does want to do,
and I believe parental involvement is the key.
