I own 4 WhisperLite stoves, they are great general purpose stoves.
While the WhisperLite series are indeed "all or nothing" stoves, the
secret to temperature control is bottle pressure (number of times you pump
it) and the fuel flow valve.
By maintaining moderate pressure (2-3 pumps to start and 1 every 4/5
minutes) you will keep pressure low and by keeping the flow control valve at
mid range you can maintain something less that the full boil/blowtorch effect.
At higher altitudes keep the fuel bottle pressure low and open up the
wind screen (let more air flow across the jet) and you will notice a more

thrilled with either one. The platforms are even more dependent on level
ground than the three legged stove by itself.
