I don't know if its a learned response or inherited, but this past
summer on our Troop's Philmont trek I was pleasantly surprised by the
boys' "appreciation and awe of nature", and not just the boy stuff
(snakes on the trail, etc.). There were numerous instances where the
lead hiker would stop just to look at the view or examine something that
caught his attention in more detail. I know at least two guys' packs
were a little heavier when they returned because of the pretty rocks
they had picked up (not significant i.e. piece of Tooth of Time, just
