Popcorn : How 2 Split the $

Dear Fellow Scouters,
***Please excuse me if this gets double posted.***
I would like to poll the list to get an idea of the different ways
that your units (especially Packs) split up the 40% that the
unit earns from the Trail's End Popcorn fund drive.
We have been splitting the money 20% to the boys and 20%
to the pack. We used to keep track of the boys' money in the
pack bank account but, were "advised" that this is not a good
idea. (And frankly, we agree for several reasons.) Last year we
gave the boys their commissions in the form of gift certificates
from the Council Scout Shop. This relieved the pack of keeping
track of the money and ensured (as much as this is possible,
anyway) that the money earned from a pack fund raiser would
be spent somehow on Scout stuff. And these gift certificates could
be used toward summer camps.
Last year we sold almost $4000, which was by far the best our pack
ever did. In fact, I believe only five other units (including troops) sold
more in our district. The unit's 20% came to $790 and yet, we needed
another fund raiser in the summer. We certainly could use more funds
(I know, who doesn't) and since we have so much trouble getting
parental help in the summer that other 20% of the popcorn money
is looking mighty good. (Hey, does that sound like a politician?)
It's come to my attention that other units keep varying amounts of the
pack percentage all the way up to the entire 40%. Our pack split
it 50/50 when I came along and I guess I just assumed that was the rule.
Our committe is kicking around if we're going to make a change. So,
I am looking to the members of this Scouting list to share what has
worked for you and what has not. We were thinking of handing out
incentive prizes for every $50, $100, $250, $500 and so on of popcorn
sold, in addition to the limited incentives offered by Trails End. We
certainly don't want to advocate a policy change that 1- is not allowed
or 2- unethical.
It's only August and yet, it seems like summer is over all ready. To
mimmick our Webelos son, "That's not fair!".
Thank you in advance for your help.
Have a great Scouting weekend.
