As the "dean of the longwinded announcers" (at least, according to my
wife!), here's how I keep it brief and to the point.
First, I issue a handbill to remind people what it is I'm promoting.
Second, I use a SINGLE 3x5 index card for ALL of my notes I want to say. If
it's NOT on the card, I DON'T SAY IT.
Third, I always try to face my audience and a clock. When I've spent three
minutes, its time for me to wrap it up. Five minutes, I'm REALLY pushing
it. At six minutes, no matter where I'm at in my "talk", I start moving to
my seat and sit in it. And then, I shut up (hard to do, but that's what I do).
I've always subscribed to a simple principle adopted early in my public
STAND UP -- SPEAK UP -- SHUT UP --- SIT DOWN.
