When I took over a Joint Roundtable Commissioner I was
faced with the challenge of long guest announcements.
After a unanimous vote from the attendees, I took care
of lengthy presentations with a cowbell & cattle call.
15 minutes before the start of RT, I ring the bell &
ask that anyone who needs to get on the agenda should
check in with me (many people contact me ahead of
time, over phone or e-mail). I urge people to come
with handouts to explain the details. I also tell them
about the 2-minute warning.
At 2 minutesI start ringing the cowbell & don't stop
until the person sits down. This is done
good-naturedly--but people get the point. And the
session keeps moving.
Is this rude? Maybe, but it's not any ruder than tying
up a lot of people's limited time by droning on and on
and on--much like I'm doing now :-). And, I have the
full support of the Commissioner & the attendees.
Occasionally, an important item comes up that requires
extra time--the Dist. Commissioner usually tells me in
But, the cowbell works for us!
