My need is an answer to the rather expensive four-seasons tents. When using
a regular tent in cold weather, below freezing, a lot of moisture builds up
in the tent causing the floor to become wet along with the occupants.
It sounds to me as though your scouts are not puting a plastic ground
cloth between the ground and the bottom of the tent. Depending on what type
of winters you have (here in NJ we don't get a lot of snow but it can get
cold sometimes), you might not need a four season tent. We use three season
tents and have gone on snowy campouts with them and they held up fine as long
as the were put up right. Just remember, it is very important to have a
ground cloth under the tent both to prevent moisture from soaking through the
bottom and to help protect the bottom from punctures from rocks and sticks so
your tents will last longer.
