Rod, Mike, and the list,
This idea was put forward by our Camp Director last year. At the
time I thought it was a good idea (and I still do). Wow, a captive
audience! What an easy way to "Get it Done"!! Some of our problems with
training here are getting the leaders to make time to be trained,
convincing them of the need, promoting training, and finding the
Training Staff to be available when needed. Sound familiar??? I don't
have any info on whether or not it was attempted last year, or if it
was, what the outcome was.
We have an even greater need for Training now as our Council has
implemented a policy that states that to be rechartered in 1999 every
Unit must have an SMF Trained Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and
Committee Chair. That's just for this year. By the end of 2000 EVERY
leader, uniformed or committee, must be trained or they will not
recharter the unit. This policy applies to every Troop, Pack, Team, and
Crew. What we are being told here is that we are "ahead of the curve"
and that this will become National Policy within the next ??? years. We
have also been told that at the time of implementation by National it
will possibly be a "Train First, Register Later" policy. In other words,
in the future, if you wish to register as a Scouter you will first have
to be trained up to the Scoutmaster Fundamentals level or the
appropriate training for your program.
Does anyone out there have any more info on this?? This has been passed
on to us by our professionals, but it would be nice to have an outside
read on this. Have any other Councils implemented this policy?? What
were the pluses and minuses??? Reply to me off-list to save bandwidth or
to the list if you think we'll all be interested.
Thanks in advance!!!
