Newspaper folded in half (along its fold)
Find middle of top fold, make a triangle Fold from both right and left
(it'll be a little squarer than this illustration)

|_______| There are two sheets here at the bottom, fold each up to its own
side, and you have a hat! (a staple or two on the side with the triangles
will secure them)
Buy those little sword cocktail skewers. Use them for a craft? Game? maybe
Make an eyepatch
Have a game where they "walk the plank"
Leaders dress up as pirates, striped shirts, pants cut off below knee, scarf
on head, hook for a hand
Songs? The Gallant Ship... I'm sure there are lots more....
a pom pom and felt parrot craft
Origami boat races in a tub of water
Hunt for a treasure chest full of chocolate coins
Take a sheet of newspaper. Hold it so that the long side is on the sides,
and the short ends are top and bottom. This is so that we are both folding
from the same direction.
Fold the paper in half - from the top to the bottom. (Now the two short
edges are together).
Along the folded part, make two triangles, by taking the top left hand
corner and folding it down, until the folded edge is vertical. Then take
the top right hand corner and fold it until the folded edge exactly meets
the other vertical folded edge. Your paper should now look like a triangle,
with two flaps in front, and a little piece, say an inch of the newspaper
flat below it.
Fold that flap that is below the folded part UP, in the front. Turn the
whole thing over and take the flap from the back and fold it up. Now it
looks a little like a hat.
The next part of the instructions make that hat into a boat, or a smaller
hat, and in case that is what you want, I will endeavor to describe them
Rotate the hat, so that the bottom stays down, but one of the pointy pieces
is aimed directly at you. Fold the hat, so that that pointy part meets the
pointy part on the other side, and the front becomes the right corner and
the back of the hat becomes the left corner. (The easiest way to do this is
to open it by pulling lightly the front and back away from each other, and
then pushing the sides in, until their INSIDES touch.) Make sense?
Put the hat down on the table, with the (original) left side up. Take the
bottom tip of the side and move it up till it is even with the top point.
Fold in the middle.
Turn the hat over and repeat the last step with the right side.
Take the point of the left side in your left hand, and the point on the
right side in your right hand, and gently pull them apart until you have a
boat shape. Is this the shape that you want? Or did you want the hat shape
that is the first part of this?
