No. This is not something new.
In my own personal case, the installation cable TV center and the Army Armor
School's Leadership Department chartered the first Explorer Post I became a
member of, WFKE-TV Post 294. The commercial radio station off-post
chartered WSAC-FM Post 666.
A Wendy's resturant chartered a management Post in Radcliff; several banks
chartered Explorer Posts in banking, financial services, and management in
Radcliff, Elizabethtown and Upton, Kentucky.
My Post's "competitors" in Louisville, Lexington and Bowling Green were all
commericial TV stations.
Basically, any organization can charter a BSA unit...it is NOT limited to
just "non-profits" nor just to community service organizations like Rotary.
Those are the best organizations because it would give the broadest base of
support to a BSA unit than a specific organization like a cable TV company
or a bank would.
The key is that the organization and the BSA, represented by the local
Council, has to come to agreement on the things that both will bring to this
new unit. That's covered in the meeting between the head of the chartering
organization, the organizer of the new unit, and if neccessary, the
District's Executive or other professional member of the District's
Hope that all helps out!
