My oldest son is on staff this summer for the first time
teaching the Orienteering merit badge. He had a leader
complain to him during the week our troop was there
and I ask my son what the leader's complain was,
"was it that you are making the Scouts do the requirements?"
My son replied, "yeah, basically."
To be fair in this situation, the camp guide published before
my son was hired did not mention that Scouts would have to
come on their own in the afternoons to run the required
orienteering courses. So the class was taking more time
than originally advertised. HOWEVER, there's just no way
to complete that merit badge in 5 one hour sessions.
So please support and even praise the camp staff when they
stick to high standards and require Scouts to DO all of the
