You just gotta love it when Scouts get positive front
page press in the newspaper!
The headline from the 6/30 San Jose Mercury News:
Scout finds lost girls
Two girls (8 & 12) had been lost in the Lake Alpine
area (south of Lake Tahoe) for 24 hours. 4-5 ft snow
drifts still cover this area, and the temperatures plunged
that night. The girls saw the search helicopter, but were
unable to attract their attention.
The girls came across a food stash, took some food, and
went back into the wilderness. Tom Ferrey from Berkeley
CA Troop 6 found the stash opened. At first he thought it
might have been a member of the troop, but remembering
the story of the lost girls, quickly figured that it might have
been the lost girls, and took off after them.
Tom quickly located them just sitting on a rock. Tom and
his troop got the girls to the sherriff's comand post.
Given the results of recent missing persons in the woods,
this was a very happy ending.
Congrats to Tom for quick thinking and acting to help others.
