Other than the reference to his mother being on the Troop Committee, and
being in denial, you wrote nothing of family involvement. Have you had
a meeting with both(?) parents; found out whether he (they) are
receiving therapy; or discussed the situation within your Council to see
if they can direct you, him, and the family towards some supportive
services for the emotionally disAbled? Is he on medication, or is it
being adequately monitored (particularly given the camp experience)?
You wrote that a private school expelled him (first of all, why was he

That was an easy call, the school passed the problem on to society under
the guise of protecting the other students.
You could do the same, you could suspend or expel him from the Troop,
and pass the problem on. But, IMO that call could be too easy. I don't
know if your Troop operates throughout the summer (other than camp and

Find out what he is prepared to invest in the process. If one of HIS
goals is Eagle then he should know that all of actions can affect a
Board's decisions, including (positively) his willingness to seek help,
internalize what he learns from it, and change. That gives him two plus
years to act and reflect. (How about a project that deals with burn
victims? Do you have a regional hospital center devoted to such
Wouldn't it be nice if they issued a magic wand with this job?
