What I meant by it wouldn't happen is that the Scouts in my Troop would
not be rushed, or be allowed to be rushed through the ranks unless I
thought they had efffectively LEARNED the material. Many Scout learn it
for getting something signed off, and then they as easily forget it.
They really never learned it. Sorry, but I just typed faster than I
If a Scout at age 13 or 14 said he was ready to have his Eagle pinned on,
I would give him the same consideration as a 15-17yr old. So, don't pull
your son out of the Troop yet(figuretively). A Scout is ready when he is
ready, but not before. I just think as a whole, many Scouts are not
ready for the RESPONSIBILITY that the Eagle brings with it. I see that
many Scouts these days really don't respect the Eagle and RW&B ribbon
that they have been awarded.
Does this make anymore sense? Sorry to make it look like I am a
dictator. It's just the Eagle is one of my big SOAPBOXES I get on. It
just seems that National has made it too easy to get the Eagle in the
here and now.
BTW---I got my Eagle at 17. I really hate to see Eagles get them in the
last hour that they can before their 18th b-day. It is our
responsibility that ALL Scouts who qualify for the Eagle, whether 13 or
17, EARNS it. They must not only meet the requirements, but should be
able to repeat what they learned at ANYTIME, not just when it is being
signed off. That is truly what the Scout Spirit and Scoutmaster's
Conference requirements are for.
