(I got this idea out of The Scouter several years back.)
Tuesday and Thursday evening is designated as Troop time at our
summer camp. On one of those nights our troop activity is to make
home made ice cream. I use the no-cook recipe from the Betty Crocker
Cookbook. Place about 2 cups of the mixture into a clean 1-lb.
coffee can and duct tape the lid closed. Put the 1-lb. can inside a
5-lb. coffee can. Fill the remaining space with ice and rock salt,
and duct tape the lid. Find a smooth hard surface and let two boys
roll the can to each other. Check the process every 7 or 8 minutes
and add ice & salt as needed. Since there is no dasher the mixture
will freeze to the outside of the small can. (The more mixture you
put in, the longer it will take to freeze.) They usually get tired
before it gets completely frozen. (Anywhere from 15 to 25 minutes
depending.) But that's OK. They stir it up and enjoy.
Your milage may vary.
