I've been following with interest the thread on First Summer Camp and only have
one thing to add. It's important that the leaders have some program activities
planned, in addition to the camp offered program, that can help fill dead time.
There's no camp that can fill every minute of every day (unless you go to a
merit badge factory).
By making sure there is always something for the Scouts to do they are less
likely to get into mischief. If you treat summer camp as just another camping
trip the first time troop can do fine. Most leaders I know always have
something up their sleeve to fill time on camping trips when the youth setup
program creates too much dead time. Expectations and anxiety often lead to what
is perceived as a less than pleasant experience because the camp may not live up
to what the leaders and scouts expect.
