Tiger Cub Awards

I have received many replies regarding the awards Tiger Cubs can earn.
Because I received many replies stating it shouldn't be a problem because
TCs change to Wolfs before the summer, I should have included in my post
that we just signed up some new TCs in June for the new year. A summary of
I've never seen it in writing, but three years ago when I attended Cubmaster
training at Philmont, we had a round-robin session with different topics.
At that time, it was stated that Tigers could NOT earn the recruiting strip.
No reason was given as to why. They should be able earn any award that the
pack presents to other ranks, ie. pinewood derby, space derby, etc.
When they graduate from Kindergarten, about June 1, we accept them fully
into the pack. They are also eligible for the Summertime pack award for
participating in the 3 summertime pack activities. They have the prerogative
of beginning their Tiger Cub Group program now, or in August/Sept. when
What about summertime pack activity for the scout or for the den?
Absolutely! Recruiter badge? You bet! Others? Religious awards, if their
church has a program for youth that young. For any others, use your best
They [TCs] could earn all the "national, council or district" awards that
the other dens could earn. They stood uniform inspection and could earn the
Recruiter. Tigers could earn the individual Summertime Award if they joined
in spring instead of fall. They are issued the Quality Unit patch. Tigers
wear their awards on their orange patch vest [this is a pack thing], their
shirt or on their new Cub uniform when they graduate.
Our council has always accepted Tiger Cub & parent registrations in MAY when
they graduate kindergarten. They consider them first graders WHEN the boy
leaves kindergarten. We have felt that it is important to make ALL pack
activities available to the Tiger Cubs and their parents.
The one thing I wouldn't push too hard is the awards thing. I think it is
really great to reward them, but the emphasis really has to be on having FUN
rather than earning awards. Make the program available, but don't push too
hard at these really young boys to 'earn everything'.
We allow Summertime Pack Award and include them in our moving up ceremony at
our last pack nite of the year (we give them a Wolf neckerchief)
Just checked my Cub Leader Handbook. No, it does not say that Tiger Cubs are
eligible for the Summertime Pack Award, but then again it doesn't say that
they aren't. My read is that since Tigers are now considered a den and part
of the Pack, not a separate group as they were for several years, they are
eligible. I guess the way I would present it is to challenge any detractors
to show you where it says that TC can't earn the award.
In addition to the paws & stuff, we give our Tigers a mid-year patch during
the year at our awards pack meeting and at the end of the year a tiger
graduate patch that they can wear on their cs uniforms. You can also give
out summertime activity pins in September if they have participated in a
scouting event in each month of June, July and August.
For Tiger Awards, I created cards like the other scout awards. We give the
cards to the boys at the pack meeting and then they can go iron on their
paws. I created the cards in PowerPoint and another leader reformatted them
so they fit to pre-perfed card stock. I'd be happy to share them to a
repository if someone is aware of one. One year we had the tigers have
orange scarves to iron the paws on.
As far as I know there is only the iron-ons, totems and beads. I heave head
of some packs allowing them to earn Bobcat. I believe this is best to let
them earn right at the beginning of the next season.
