Scouts-L Mail Archive for June of 1999: mile swim or not?
mile swim or not?
Thu, 24 Jun 1999 20:36:53 EDT
A Sm has a kid who thinks he earned the mile swim by walking in the shallow
ends, taking breathers in between laps, and not really swimming the mile
uninterrupted as a result. Does he
just drop it and
award the patch along with the others (who worked their tails off)?
Should I be more aggressive and not even allow him the option
(can I even do that?)
IMHexperience, it has been the camp waterfront staff who monitors and
administers the mile swim. Didn't they let everyone know that this is a mile
SWIM, not a "mile swim some, walk some, rest some?" If so, then he clearly
did not earn it, and you should be able to let them take the heat for it.
Besides, I think the kid knows it, and you have every right to call him on
it and let him know why the kids who did the SWIM get the patch and he
doesn't. Offer to let him redo it at a local pool anytime if he wants to
really do it.
You can praise him for his effort (what there was of it) but I'm firmly in
the camp of those who object to awarding unearned recognition. It cheapens it
for those who really earned it, and lets the cheaters (yup, strong word)
think that cheating is OK.
