In response to Patricia Lewis' question about Quarterly Leadership Updates,
Wendell Brown did a great job explaining the theory and practice of the QLU.
I'd just like to through in my 2 cents worth.
The number for the "Supplemental Training For Cub Scout Leaders" syllabus is
34703. It can be ordered by that number.
I don't wish to crank up the debate about the decision to shorten Cub Scout
Leader Basic Training. I've voiced my opinion concerning that one often
enough. The discussion about that and QLUs got very heated at my Training
Cub Scout Leaders conference at Philmont last year, as well, Wendell. I'd
be willing to bet that it happens anytime Cub Leader trainers get together.
I'm just curious about the success of QLUs in other Councils. We have
attempted them and the result was terribly low turnout. One was even
cancelled due to zero attendance. So we re-grouped and set off on a heavy
promotion and PR campaign with only marginal improvement. Have others had
success with these and, if so, how?
This topic came up at CST Wood Badge this past summer (SR-CS-12) and many
leaders left there with renewed enthusiasm about QLUs and numerous tickets
to that effect. 10 months later, the ones that I've been able to stay in
touch with have expressed disappointment and frustration with low
participation. Most have no or very little desire to continue them.
I'd love to hear some success stories and some knock-your-socks-off ideas
for getting these going. I'd also like to hear some innovative ideas for
presenting the same info to leaders in other formats (roundtables, pow wows,
etc.). Thanks, all.
