Having just returned from summer camp and watching my boys go through
the present swimming merit badge, I stick to my contention that
that these requirements are a bit tough for the youngs boys
approaching the first class level, especially the pants floatation.
Any of our Scouts who pass swimming merit badge will be signed off
on these requirements.
But, ALL of our boys made it! I see what the BSA is doing in light of
the reports of a new swimming merit badge. They felt the floatation
requirement was important enough to keep (assuming it will be dropped
in the new merit badge program) and the only place to put it is in
the highest rank that has requirements, 1st class.
As I said, all of our boys passed it. Some "cheated" by holding on
to the side quite a bit, some worked their tail off out in the deep.
My son was the last one to finish. He struggled to the point of
exhaustion. I called out at him to swim over to one of the 2 instructors
in the water for some personal attention. After 5 to 10 minutes he had
inflated pants using the "blow air into them" method. He is simply
too young and small to through them over his head.
So what the heck am I saying? I am saying it can be done. Don't just
waver it. My small son and the rest of the small boys were mighty proud
of their accomplishment. Don't rob them of that.
