FL MB project

A Scout says his SM "disallowed" a Y2K garden and storage project for Family
Life, and asks our input.
I guess I'm not clear on why a SM would disallow a MB project unless HE is
the MB counselor. It is up to the counselor to approve or disapprove a
project, to sign or not sign the blue card for completion. If a MB counselor
is working with you because the SM signed the blue card, then the SM has to
take the counselor's completion.
Otherwise, we're not talking Eagle project here. Planning, doing is enough,
provided you fill the reqs: one project that you do for your family, one
project that you plan with them and all your family works on, and wriote it
up enough that the MBC can tell who did what and how you planned it.
Some of the former I've seen (and signed off on as a FL MBC) are: checking
and replacing batteries or units if nec in all fire/smoke/CO alarms in a
home, painting a bathroom, changing the oil on both family vehicles
regularly, cleaning out the lint traps and vent hoses, and replacing the
hoses, on the family dryer, and scraping and painting a boat bottom. Each
took about a half a day's work.
Some of the latter included: selecting and planting a bunch of evergreen
seedlings for the family's Christmas trees, completing a custom built-in
storage thing in a new closet, laying out and spading a vegie garden &
helping put up the results, finishing a room addition and moving the
furniture into it, clearing land, replacing a slider. Each of these took the
(some pretty small) families at least a whole day or more. Of course, if you
are working with a big family you might take on a bigger project that
involves all of them.
I felt that these were appropriate and useful tasks whose completion gave the
boy an appreciation for the work it takes to keep a household going for a
family, and to get a family coordinated to do the big ones. Which is, after
all, the point of the MB.
Let us know how it works out for you.
