There has been a lot of discussion on youth protection but
I don't think the original question was answered well...
Somebody did point out that youth protection training now
takes only an hour and a half. What wasn't mentioned was how
many opportunities merit badge counselors have to be trained.
In my relatively small district (11 troops - 14 packs), the
way we make sure all Scouters are youth protection trained is
by including it at the beginning of every district training
program. Then we invite all to attend regardless of whether
or not the rest of the training is appropriate to their
position. This affords us around six youth protection
training opportunities each year.
Our council also offers several training opportunities
throughout the year, especially right before, during, or
after summer camp. In addition, we keep track of neighboring
districts and councils who gladly accept our members in their
programs. In all cases, youth protection training is provided
free of charge.
