Thanks to all of you who responded to my original post. I've gotten
quite a few responses on this and figured I'd compile the replies now
for everyone's edification.
1. Anyone wishing to register as a merit badge counselor must either be
a previously registered adult in the BSA, or must fill out and turn in
the adult registration form.
2. There is no registration fee for individuals who are registering only
as a merit badge counselor. The position code "42" indicates someone
who is only a MBC and does not require the payment of a fee. According
to Bruce Coburn, this info appears on page 9 of the 1998 edition of the
3. YPT is not required by National.
Those are the facts, now here the rest of the story. After getting what
I considered a "wrong" answer from a DE yesterday, I called the Director
of Field Services (# 2 pro at the council) today and he agreed with me
on the fee question and was surprised to find out that the local council
MBC registration form and the DE had said otherwise. He's following up
and will get back to me.
The local council has decided to impose the YPT requirement on MBC's.
IMNSHO this is not a bad idea, but is probably impractical when you are
talking about getting the local teacher who is willing to handle music,
scholarship, or reading mb to sign up. Maybe if we had a take home
faststart type of YPT that could be viewed on video at home this would
work, but I can't see the local school teacher coming out to a two or
three hour training session for this.
Does anyone out there have any other suggestions on how to accomplish
this admittedly worthy goal of getting all MBC's trained in YPT???
