Uh Oh! Heart Attack!

I'd like to hear more from those of us in the medical
community about using asprin to prevent heart damage. It has been my
understanding that one asprin tablet per day will thin your blood or
make it less sticky, and just recently I have been hearing that
immediate administration of one asprin tablet upon feeling the symptoms
of a heart attack will help to dissolve any obstruction that HAS already
formed, and thin/lubricate your blood to help prevent any further
clotting at the site.
I'm one of those older folks whom scouting has rounded out,
so I take a daily prophylactic asprin tablet, but it is the enteric
coated type that isn't supposed to irritate the stomach by, presumably
waiting until it gets into the intestine before dissolving. I suspect
that most of us use this sort of tablet. It seems to me that this
enteric coating would defeat the first-aid purpose of popping an asprin
at the first chest twinge/tightness/malaise, since it must transit the
stomach before it can dissolve - some minutes, while a plain generic
white asprin tablet would start dissolving in your stomach, especially
if taken with a couple glasses of water. A point of TV asprin
commercials of the past.
These uncoated tablets seem to be less stable than the
coated ones, especially when exposed to moisture or humidity, when they
can begin to break down into some of their component parts - if it
smells vinegary, toss it - so it looks as if we should start carrying
one or two of those sealed packets of asprin tablets frequently found in
motel lobbys, to insure freshness; and replace them frequently.
I invite opinions from medical personnel, or even those who
play them on TV, who are on this list, on these thoughts.
