>We have probably beat this subject to death..........
We have, but this does bear repeating:
>Last night my District presented the District Award of Merit to 6 >adults.
Since I am the District Commissioner, I like to set the example. I >wore my
Silver Beaver Award AND my Eagle Medal. I was told by a >couple of adults
that only the youth can wear the medal....I was floored.
They were wrong. You were in the right.
>I know the youth can only wear the patch, and the adults wear the knot,
>but I was sure I, as an adult could wear the medal. I only do it on special
>occassions like when we award the Silver Beaver, Dist Awards of Merit >and
courts on honors. I have been doing this since 1972 when I earned >the award.

You are, Steve. Once again, for those unaware:
The Eagle Scout CLOTH BADGE (the oval shaped badge) is ONLY worn by SCOUTS,
VARSITY SCOUTS, and VENTURES on the field uniform. It is NOT worn by ADULTS
The Eagle Scout MEDAL (the silver eagle suspended from a red, white and blue
ribbon held by a bar shaped in the shape of the Second Class badge) is worn
by YOUTH AND ADULT MEMBERS DURING FORMAL OCCASIONS. "Formal occasions" are
those instances in which BSA awards are being presented; Courts of Honor, to
include Eagle Courts of Honor; unit, district, council, regional area,
regional and national recognition dinners and presentation events. Unit
meetings, Roundtables or other meetings DO NOT QUALIFY as a "formal
occasion". Nor are OA induction ceremonies a "formal occasion".
After the conclusion of the FORMAL OCCASION, the MEDAL comes off the uniform
and is put away until the next formal occasion.
The Eagle Scout SQUARE KNOT (the red, white and blue rope tied in a square
knot, on a khaki-tan, green, white or blue background depending on uniform
worn) is ONLY worn by ADULT MALE SCOUTERS on the field uniform during ALL
other occasions. If a Scouter has earned Eagle palm(s), the palm(s) are
worn on the knot centered if possible.
YES, you can wear both knot and Medal during FORMAL occasions.
This is because most Scouters only have one uniform, and it's imprudent on
National's part to force Scouters to remove square knots for a few hours to
wear the medal, only to place the square knot back onto the uniform shirt.
YES, you may wear the Eagle Scout MEDAL on the lapel or pocket of a civilian
jacket or sport coat during FORMAL events in which you are present but are
NOT in a field uniform. This is NOT written in any BSA manual; it has
become tradition and my understanding is that it will be presented in a
subsequent edition of the Insignia (Control) Guide.
Your event was a FORMAL event, Steve....you were in the right.
Hope this clears it up for those Scouts and Scouters still wondering if they
can wear the Eagle during special events!!
