highly expected. Now I'm not suggesting that we not encourage boys to
but there seems to be a kind of "succeed at everything!" attitude. Boys
aren't allowed to simply "play baseball"....they've gotta be stars. Well, it
seems to me that we have very few boys who can simply "enjoy scouting"
without a lot of pressure to "succeed at scouting".
I agree, Jim, that Scouting should be fun first. In my book, though,
fulfilling the requirement leading to advancement should be the most fun, not
drudgery. I'd think that it would be hard to have real fun in Scouting
without advancing, unless the Scout does all the skills learning and has the
activities experiences without getting "signed off". If "fun" in Scouting
simply means "hanging out", I'm off base; I think it means a lot more.
That said, I don't think we need to drive Scouts without mercy to advance,
but we should offer and encourage the wherewithall necessary to advance. Fun
without force, I guess.
