Kevin Woods brings up questions about using troop meetings for merit badge
We have been working toward a program the body of which is instructional
activite for all levels/ages. At the same time we are instructing new and
lower rank Scouts on rank advancement, MB counselor(s) are holding classes or
sessions on MBs. It is working well, thonly possible hitch being the desire
of a Scout who you would like instructing the younger Scouts needing to
attend the MB. There have been, thus far, enough Scouts who don't need/want
the MB or adults to fill in.
For variety in what they are doing, a few MB opportunities are offered to
newer Scouts. Dentistry and Fingerprinting, for example, are less involved
MBs and whet the newer Scouts' interest.
All join in games and sometimes an MB and rank requirements mesh eg. Physical
Fitness MB and TF physical fitness or First Aid MB and the requirement that a
Scout taking same needs to instruct a first aid skill.
It has been an enhancement to meetings to have counselors of various MBs
"present" their topic to everyone, regardless of who mayor may not take the
MB right then. For example, last week, Scouts arrived to find a Sunfish set
up, sails and all, in the middle of the gym floor. The MB counselor let
everyone clamber over the boat, answered questions, and, basicallt, "sold"
participation in the MB.
Hope this makes sense.
