We used "exotic" merit badges to keep our older scouts coming back for more.
We asked our Venture patrol to come up with a list of merit badges that they
would like to take, that were not on the required list for Eagle. Now
remember, the Venture guys that I work with are 16-17 and most are Eagle or
almost Eagle. We got a great list including Aviation (tied that one in with
the current Young Eagles program), Crime Prevention, Auto Mechanics,
Climbing, Auto Mechanics, Space Exploration, Archeology, Rifle Shooting
(black powder version). My job was to go out and find the resources to teach
these badges. We even spent two months working in an auto garage fixing up a
car; the kids' parents were overjoyed that their sons were learning how to
take care of the family car.
Offering these types of merit badges worked for us. Did we run a merit badge
factory where everyone in the Venture patrol passed? Nope. Just like at
summer camp, there were always some kids that missed meeting or did not turn
in assignments. The end result was that our older scouts felt like there was
something at the meeting for them. If there is nothing planned at your
meetings, scouts, especially older ones, are going to go to another one of
the many activities that they are trying to balance with Scouting that will
meet their individual needs.
By the way, the majority of those scouts crossed over and formed a new
Venturing Crew where they are now working towards their Venturing Bronze,
Gold, Silver and Ranger awards.
