For Scout Expo, my husband and I rigged up a small course with checkpoints.
Each checkpoint was a 2ft stake with a small orienteering type flag.
Crayola now has markers that are like stamps. We attached one to each
stake with a string (so no one would run off with the stamp).
As each boy came through the course, they were given a clipboard with a
compass attached to it by a string. We then gave each one a 3 x 5 card
that had been divided into 8 squares. We taped the directions of the
course to the bottom of the clipboard. My husband guided each boy through
the course (teaching compass skills) and at each checkpoint, the boy would
use the stamp on his card. The stamps are a big hit with any kid.
Try to keep it interesting. Using some of the little compass sayings
helps. NESW.....Never Eat Soggy Waffles. For some reason thats the only
one I can think of right now. Anyone know of any other ones?
